Gourds, Crafts and Acrylic Painting, Oh My!

Acrylic painting for Dummies

This blog was created for beginners and the talent-impaired.  If you’re an expert on acrylic painting and gourd crafting,  that’s ok, too.  We’ll welcome you, anyway.

Late in life I discovered that I absolutely LOVE to paint…but I had absolutely no training and unfortunately, was not born with much natural talent. However, I have an almost obsessive persistence and once I set my mind to learn something, I will keep trying long after a rational person would have called it quits .
I decided to teach myself (mostly by trial and error) painting techniques and skills using acrylic paints. If you have ever wished you could learn to paint, you may be interested in joining me on my journey. I’ll be sharing every detail with photos, articles and resources for you to use on your path to your own acrylic painting obsession.

!I first became interested in painting gourds, of all things, when my husband, who is an avid gardener, decided to grow them in our backyard.  He harvested an abundant crop of them and we had gourds of every shape and size.

Below is one of my first attempts at decorating gourds…

I know, I know….pretty bad artwork, huh?  At least they were all coated with high gloss polyurethane, which can make anything look better.
Oh! By the way, that was meant to be leaves on the weird bowl…not frogs!

But anyway, I received a few compliments on the gourds and one day my husband took a few to work and actually sold them!!  They went for around $40 and I was hooked!

For the next several months, I painted gourd after gourd with an assortment of acrylic paints purchased at the local Walmart and cut them using a skill saw and a drill.  Gradually I noticed my paintings getting a little better.  Sometimes they would actually turn out looking somewhat like I envisioned.
